Chinese Humanoid Robot Matches Sprinting Speed of Olympic Legend
A Chinese robotics startup has stunned the world by pushing the boundaries of artificial locomotion. Unitree Robotics recently showcased its latest humanoid robot, the H1, sprinting across an athletics track at an electrifying pace. During this test, the robot clocked an astonishing ten meters per second, setting a new benchmark for humanoid speed and coming tantalizingly close to the record held by the fastest human ever timed.
This achievement is particularly noteworthy because it brings machine performance within a hair’s breadth of biological greatness. When Usain Bolt set his legendary 100-meter world record of 9.58 seconds, his average speed was approximately 10.44 meters per second. The H1’s top speed of 10 meters per second places it in direct competition with the Jamaican sprinter’s historic pace.
Designed for Human-Like Agility
The H1 robot is engineered to mirror the proportions and physical capabilities of an average adult. Standing with a leg length of 80 centimeters and weighing roughly 62 kilograms, it is built for balance and efficiency. In the released footage, the robot maintains impeccable posture and coordination, adjusting its stride with precision as it races down the track. While the speed measurement device registered a peak of 10.1 meters per second, the company acknowledges minor variances in the reading.
This remarkable performance is powered by a suite of advanced technologies. The H1 features a cutting-edge powertrain, high-torque motors, and depth-sensing cameras paired with 3D LiDAR sensors. These components work in harmony to provide stability even on uneven or challenging surfaces, allowing the robot to sustain high speeds without losing its footing.
A Glimpse into the Future of Robotics
The test run was not merely a publicity stunt. It served as a preparation trial for the Second Humanoid Robot Half Marathon, scheduled to take place in Beijing. Over seventy teams have already registered to compete in this event, which will test the endurance and speed of humanoid robots over a longer distance. Unitree’s CEO has expressed strong confidence in the trajectory of this technology, stating at a recent forum that humanoid robots could surpass Usain Bolt’s 100-meter record by the middle of the year. This is a remarkable leap from just two years prior, when an earlier version of the same robot set a Guinness World Record for walking at a speed of 3.3 meters per second.
Beyond Sprinting: Robots Enter the Sports Arena
The capabilities of modern humanoid robots extend far beyond straight-line running. A major automotive manufacturer recently unveiled a robot named CUE7, which is capable of playing basketball. Using onboard cameras and motion planning algorithms, this robot calculates distance and angle to execute precise shots. Its predecessor, the CUE6 model, had already set a record for the longest basketball shot made by a humanoid.
China’s Rapid Advancements in Robotics
The race to develop the most advanced humanoid robot is intensifying, with several Chinese companies leading the charge. During the Spring Festival earlier this year, Unitree’s G1 robots performed autonomous kung-fu routines, demonstrating impressive agility and coordination. Another firm, MirrorMe, has introduced a robot named Bolt, which stands 175 centimeters tall, weighs 75 kilograms, and can also reach speeds of up to 10 meters per second. At the World Humanoid Robot Games held last year, the Tien Kung Ultra robot won the 100-meter sprint event with a time of 21.50 seconds, highlighting the rapid pace of improvement in the field.
These developments signal a transformative era in robotics, where machines are not only mimicking human form but also beginning to rival human athletic performance. The line between biological and mechanical capability is blurring faster than many anticipated.
