UP Board Mandates Skill-Based Education for Classes 9 and 11 From 2026

The Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP), commonly known as the UP Board, has announced a significant policy shift aimed at bridging the gap between academics and employability. Starting from the academic session beginning in 2026, skill-based vocational education will become a compulsory component for students entering Classes 9 and 11 across all affiliated schools in the state.

This strategic move is designed to equip young learners with practical, job-ready competencies alongside their traditional academic curriculum. By integrating vocational training into the mainstream schooling framework, the board intends to enhance the overall career preparedness of students, making them more competitive and self-reliant in the evolving job market.

Curriculum Development and Approved Trades

In a recent update, the board’s secretary, Bhagwati Singh, confirmed that subject committees have successfully submitted the approved syllabi for the initial set of vocational trades. The focus areas for this first phase include Information Technology (IT) and its allied sectors. Additionally, courses in Electronics, Apparel Design, Beauty and Wellness, and Health Care have been finalized to offer students a diverse range of career-oriented options from an early stage.

Industry-Aligned and Practical Learning Approach

The development of these employment-focused courses involved extensive collaboration among subject matter experts. Multiple rounds of consultations were held to ensure the curriculum meets contemporary technical demands and aligns with industry expectations. The finalized content places a strong emphasis on practical application and hands-on skill acquisition, moving beyond theoretical knowledge to foster genuine vocational competence.

The newly designed syllabus is structured to be dynamic and responsive to the needs of the modern workforce. It prioritizes the enhancement of students’ employability by focusing on real-world scenarios and problem-solving abilities. This approach ensures that learners are not just academically proficient but are also capable of contributing effectively in a professional environment from the outset.

Aligning with National Education Policy Goals

Secretary Singh highlighted that this initiative is in complete harmony with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP). The curriculum is intended to promote holistic development by encouraging skill development, self-sufficiency, and professional efficiency among students. The board views this as a proactive step to make school education more relevant and future-ready.

By making vocational training mandatory, the UP Board is taking a decisive step to transform the educational landscape. The initiative is seen as a meaningful effort to prepare students for future challenges, ensuring they have the necessary tools to succeed in higher education or to enter the workforce with a distinct advantage. This policy is expected to significantly enhance the practical knowledge of students and better align their academic journey with tangible career outcomes.
