The Significance of Vat Purnima in 2026

In Hindu tradition, the Vat Purnima fast holds profound spiritual importance. Observed primarily by married women, this sacred day is dedicated to praying for enduring marital bliss and the long life of their husbands. Central to the observance is the worship of the banyan tree, known as the Vat Vriksha, accompanied by the revered story of Savitri and Satyavan. This year, the fast falls on a specific date that devotees eagerly anticipate.

Date and Auspicious Timings for Vat Purnima 2026

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Vat Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha. For 2026, this auspicious day will be observed on Monday, June 29. The Purnima tithi begins at 3:06 AM on June 29 and concludes at 5:26 AM on June 30. Based on the prevailing sunrise rule, the festival will be marked on June 29.

For those performing the rituals, the Brahma Muhurta—considered an ideal time for bathing and prayer—will last from 4:06 AM to 4:46 AM. Additionally, the Abhijit Muhurta, another highly favorable window, is recommended for conducting the main worship ceremony.

Favorable Planetary Alignments and Worship Timings

This year, two particularly beneficial yogas (auspicious planetary alignments) will coincide with Vat Purnima. The first of these auspicious periods begins in the morning and remains active until 2:36 PM. Immediately following its conclusion, the second favorable yoga, known as Brahma Yoga, commences. Performing the puja during these windows is believed to amplify the spiritual benefits and ensure the fulfillment of one’s heartfelt wishes.

Religious Importance of the Vat Purnima Fast

The Vat Purnima vrat is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and is especially significant for married women. It is widely observed across India, with particular fervor in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and South India, while in the northern regions, a similar fast is often kept on the Jyeshtha Amavasya (new moon).

On this day, women dress in their finest attire and gather around a banyan tree. They perform a complete ritualistic worship, which includes offering water, flowers, and sacred threads. The key practices involve circumambulating the tree (parikrama) and tying a cotton or silk thread around its trunk. This act is a symbolic prayer for the unbroken good fortune and longevity of their husbands. Following the rituals, women listen to or recite the legendary tale of Savitri, who, through her unwavering devotion and wit, rescued her husband Satyavan from the god of death, Yama. This narrative reinforces the power of a wife’s dedication and love.

Blessings and Benefits of Worshipping the Banyan Tree

Ancient scriptures, including the Skanda Purana, emphasize the immense virtue gained from venerating the banyan tree on this specific day. It is believed that such worship brings harmony and peace to married life. The benefits are manifold:

  • Enduring Marital Bliss: The ritual is performed to remove obstacles in the marital relationship, strengthening the bond between husband and wife.
  • Longevity of the Husband: The act of circling the tree and tying the sacred thread is a direct prayer for the husband’s long and healthy life.
  • Fulfillment of Desires: Women who observe this fast with sincerity are said to have their deepest wishes granted, particularly those related to family and prosperity.
  • Blessings for Children: The puja is also associated with seeking happiness and well-being for one’s children.
  • Eternal Merit: Planting a banyan tree on this day is considered an act of great piety, bestowing the planter with inexhaustible spiritual merit.

How to Perform the Vat Purnima Puja

While the core rituals remain consistent, the practice can vary slightly by region. A general guide to the puja includes:

  • Wake up early, take a ritual bath, and wear clean, preferably traditional, clothes.
  • Visit a banyan tree or a designated spot in a temple or garden.
  • Clean the area around the tree and draw a small square (rangoli) at its base.
  • Offer water, raw milk, sandalwood paste, red vermillion (kumkum), rice, flowers, and fruits to the tree.
  • Light a lamp (diya) and incense sticks.
  • Circulate the tree seven or eleven times while chanting prayers or mantras.
  • Tie a sacred thread (kalava or mouli) around the trunk seven or eleven times.
  • Listen to or read the story of Savitri and Satyavan.
  • Conclude the puja by seeking blessings from elders and distributing prasad (offerings).
