The Sacred Observance of Vat Savitri Vrat 2026

On Saturday, May 16, 2026, married women across India will observe the revered Vat Savitri Vrat. This day holds profound spiritual significance, as it commemorates the legendary devotion of Savitri, who courageously pleaded with Lord Yama, the god of death, to restore her husband Satyavan’s life. By keeping this fast, women seek unwavering marital bliss, their husband’s longevity, and a harmonious married life. This year, the occasion coincides with Shanishchari Amavasya (Saturday’s new moon), enhancing its spiritual potency. Performing the associated rituals and remedies under these celestial alignments is believed to multiply the benefits.

Mythological and Spiritual Importance

Central to this festival is the worship of the banyan tree, known as the Vat Vriksha. According to ancient beliefs, the tree’s roots house Lord Brahma, its trunk holds Lord Vishnu, and its branches shelter Lord Shiva. This trinity makes the tree a living symbol of cosmic protection. The story of Savitri—who outwitted death through her unwavering love and intelligence—serves as a timeless reminder of a wife’s power to safeguard her husband’s well-being. Observing the Vat Savitri Vrat is thus an act of deep faith, seeking the same divine intervention for a long and prosperous married life.

Auspicious Timings for Vat Savitri Vrat 2026

The fast will be observed based on the lunar calendar. The Amavasya (new moon) of the Jyeshtha month begins at 05:11 AM on May 16, 2026, and concludes at 01:30 AM on May 17, 2026. Following the Udaya Tithi (the prevailing date at sunrise), the Vrat will be kept on Saturday, May 16. Women observing the fast can break it on the morning of May 17, after performing the puja during the Brahma Muhurat.

Key auspicious time windows for the day include:

  • Brahma Muhurat: 04:07 AM to 04:48 AM
  • Vijaya Muhurat: 02:04 PM to 03:28 PM
  • Godhuli Muhurat: 07:04 PM to 07:25 PM
  • Nishita Muhurat: 11:57 PM to 12:38 AM

Step-by-Step Puja Rituals

Performing the Vat Savitri puja with sincerity is key to its success. Follow these steps for a complete observance:

  1. Prepare the Site: Go to a banyan tree and reverently place images of Goddess Savitri and King Satyavan near its base.
  2. Offer Water: Fill a copper or brass pot with clean water and pour it at the tree’s roots as a sacred offering.
  3. Present Auspicious Items: Offer traditional symbols of a married woman’s status (suhag samagri), along with fresh fruits, flowers, and sweets.
  4. Circle the Tree: Take raw cotton thread and wind it around the banyan tree seven times while walking around it in a clockwise direction.
  5. Recite the Story: Hold a handful of roasted chickpeas (chana) in your hand and listen to or recite the Vat Savitri Vrat Katha (the story of Savitri).
  6. Conclude with Charity: Donate fruits, clothing, and a token of money (dakshina) to those in need. Bow to the banyan tree to complete the ceremony.
  7. Observe the Fast: Maintain a strict waterless fast (Nirjala Vrat) throughout the day, breaking it only after the morning puja on the following day.
  8. Unique Celestial Alignments in 2026

This year’s Vat Savitri Vrat is marked by several rare and powerful planetary combinations. The day features the Shobhan Yoga, Shanishchari Amavasya, Saturn’s birth celebration (Shani Jayanti), and the Gajalakshmi Yoga. Additionally, the Budhaditya Rajyoga (a conjunction of Mercury and the Sun in Taurus) and the Viparita Rajyoga are in effect, alongside the monthly Kartigai observance. These fortuitous alignments are believed to infuse the puja with heightened positive energy, making it an exceptionally favorable time for spiritual practices and seeking blessings.
