Universities Must Adopt Modern, Scientific Curricula: Vice President

Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan addressed the inaugural convocation of the Ratan Tata Maharashtra State Skills University on Saturday, delivering a powerful message about the future of higher education in India. Speaking to graduates, educators, and industry leaders, he emphasized that university syllabi must evolve to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world.

Blending Technical Expertise with Interpersonal Abilities

At the heart of his address was a clear assertion: success in the modern era belongs to those who master both hard skills and soft skills. While technical knowledge and domain expertise remain essential, the Vice President stressed that these must be complemented by strong communication abilities, effective teamwork, adaptability, and emotional intelligence.

He singled out adaptability as a particularly critical trait in today’s fast-paced environment. The capacity to adjust to shifting circumstances and embrace change, he noted, is no longer optional but essential for professional growth and personal development.

Education Must Directly Connect to Employment

Drawing from his own experience serving as governor in Maharashtra and other states, Radhakrishnan argued that academic degrees hold real value only when they translate into meaningful employment opportunities. He called for a fundamental reorientation of educational priorities, with greater emphasis on skill development and emerging technologies.

The Vice President asserted that a nation’s true strength lies in the capability of its people. When citizens are skilled and competent, national progress accelerates. He encouraged institutions to adopt successful practices from across society and learn from initiatives that deliver tangible benefits to communities.

Government Initiatives Reshaping Skill Development

Radhakrishnan acknowledged the transformative impact of recent policy measures in the skills sector. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has witnessed significant reforms in vocational training and human resource development. He specifically highlighted several flagship programs and institutional changes that have redefined how young Indians prepare for their futures.

Among these are the Skill India mission, the PM-SETU initiative, the Skill India Digital Hub, and the establishment of a dedicated Ministry for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Improvements in vocational training frameworks have also played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between education and industry requirements.

Youth Population: A Demographic Dividend or Challenge

Addressing India’s young population, the Vice President offered both encouragement and caution. He described the nation’s youth as its greatest potential asset, capable of driving unprecedented growth if equipped with the right skills. However, he warned that without proper training and guidance, this same demographic advantage could become a significant challenge.

He urged students to serve as ambassadors of Indian talent and capability wherever they work. Their dedication and professional conduct, he emphasized, would strengthen the country’s global reputation and open doors for future generations.

Honoring a Legacy of Excellence

Reflecting on the university’s namesake, Radhakrishnan spoke about the responsibility that comes with carrying forward Ratan Tata’s legacy. The institution, he said, has a duty to reduce the distance between education and employment while producing graduates who are not only professionally competent but also socially responsible.

The Vice President concluded by calling on industries to balance growth objectives with social responsibility. He noted that these qualities distinguish exemplary leaders and drive national advancement. By fostering a culture of ethical practice and community engagement, businesses and educational institutions alike can contribute to a stronger, more prosperous India.
