WhatsApp Introduces In-App Mobile Recharge Feature for Indian Users

WhatsApp has rolled out a significant update for its users in India, introducing a built-in mobile recharge feature. This new functionality allows prepaid subscribers of Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) to top up their accounts directly within the messaging app, without needing to switch to another platform.

The update is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to expand its utility beyond messaging. By partnering with the payment processing company PayU, the app now offers a seamless way to handle one of the most common digital transactions in the country. The feature is expected to reach all Android and iOS users over the next few weeks.

How the New Feature Works

To make the recharge process quick and accessible, WhatsApp has added a new icon to its interface. Users will notice a rupee symbol (₹) positioned next to the camera icon on the home screen. This small but powerful addition serves as a gateway to the app’s expanded payment services.

Tapping this icon opens the payments section, where users can not only recharge their mobile phones but also send money via UPI, pay bills, and book metro tickets in supported cities. The same icon also appears inside individual chats, enabling users to send payments while in the middle of a conversation.

Supported Networks and Plans

The recharge feature currently supports the three major telecom operators in India: Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi). Prepaid users from any of these networks can browse available plans and select the one that best suits their needs. The entire transaction is handled within WhatsApp, eliminating the need to open separate apps like Paytm, PhonePe, or Google Pay.

Step-by-Step Guide to Recharging via WhatsApp

Completing a recharge through WhatsApp is designed to be straightforward and secure. Follow these steps to top up your prepaid number or that of a family member or friend:

  • Open WhatsApp and tap the rupee symbol (₹) located on the home screen or inside any chat window.
  • From the menu that appears, select the option for mobile prepaid recharge.
  • Enter the mobile number you wish to recharge. This can be your own number or someone else’s.
  • Choose your telecom operator from the list: Airtel, Jio, or Vi.
  • Browse through the available recharge plans and select the one that meets your requirements.
  • Choose your preferred payment method. Options include UPI, debit card, or credit card.
  • If paying via UPI, enter your UPI PIN to authorize the transaction and complete the recharge.

What Happens After a Successful Recharge

Once the payment is processed successfully, a confirmation message appears on the screen. This confirmation includes the details of the recharge plan you selected. For users who want to keep track of their past transactions, the payments page provides a complete history at the bottom, making it easy to review previous recharges at any time.

Why This Update Matters

This new feature builds on WhatsApp’s existing payment capabilities. The app already supported bill payments and metro ticket bookings in select cities, but the addition of mobile recharge makes it a more comprehensive tool for everyday financial tasks. For millions of Indian users who rely on WhatsApp for daily communication, this integration saves time and reduces the friction of jumping between multiple apps.

The decision to launch the feature in India first reflects the country’s massive mobile user base and the high adoption of digital payments. With prepaid connections dominating the market, the ability to recharge directly from a messaging app is likely to be widely welcomed. The partnership with PayU also ensures that transactions are processed securely, giving users confidence in the new service.

As the feature rolls out gradually, it is expected to become available on both Android and iOS devices within a few weeks. Users who do not see the rupee icon immediately may need to wait for the update to reach their region. Once active, the feature will be accessible to all WhatsApp users who have set up UPI or linked a payment method within the app.
