WhatsApp Introduces Parental Controls for Underage Users
Online safety for children remains a pressing concern in today’s digital age. Recognizing this, WhatsApp is developing a dedicated feature that will allow minors under 18 to create restricted accounts with limited functionality. This initiative aims to give parents greater oversight while preserving essential privacy protections. Here is a detailed look at how the new system will work.
Why WhatsApp Is Building Parental Controls
Children increasingly gain access to smartphones and messaging apps at a very young age. To address the risks associated with early exposure, WhatsApp is working on a solution specifically designed for users below the age of 18. These restricted accounts will help maintain a child’s privacy, keep parents informed about key account activities, and shield young users from inappropriate or unknown content.
How the Secondary Account System Works
Under this new framework, parents will be able to create a secondary WhatsApp account linked directly to their own primary account. The setup process requires scanning a QR code from the child’s device using the parent’s phone. Once linked, the parent sets a six-digit primary PIN. Any significant changes to the child’s account—such as altering settings or adding new contacts—will require this PIN. This ensures that children cannot modify account settings on their own, keeping control firmly in the hands of the parent.
Restricted Features in Secondary Accounts
To enhance safety, WhatsApp has disabled several features in these managed accounts. The following limitations will apply:
- No Updates Tab: Children will not see channels, broadcast content, or any public updates. This prevents exposure to unfamiliar or unsuitable information.
- No Chat Lock: Minors cannot hide or lock any conversations. This allows parents to review, at the device level, who their child is communicating with.
- Limited Contacts: Messaging is restricted to people already saved in the child’s contact list. This blocks communication with unknown individuals.
What Parents Can and Cannot See
A common question is whether parents will be able to read their child’s messages. WhatsApp has confirmed that end-to-end encryption remains fully intact. This means all messages and calls stay private between the participants. Parents will not be able to view chat contents or listen to calls.
Instead, parental oversight focuses on activity monitoring. Parents can see when a new contact is added and track general account activity without accessing the actual conversations. This approach balances the need for child safety with respect for personal privacy.
Duration of the Secondary Account
The linked secondary account remains active until the parent manually removes it or until the child reaches WhatsApp’s official minimum age requirement. Once the child meets the age threshold, the account can be converted into a standard WhatsApp profile with full features.
Current Development Status
This parental control feature is still in the development phase. It is expected to be ready for a global rollout in the near future. WhatsApp has not yet announced a specific release date, but the system is designed to provide a safer messaging environment for younger users while giving families the tools they need to manage digital boundaries effectively.
