WhatsApp Tests New Auto-Photo Feature to Replace Blank Profile Pictures
Many users choose to remove their profile pictures for privacy or personal reasons. This often creates confusion, especially when multiple contacts share the same name, making it difficult to identify the right person in a chat list. WhatsApp is now working on a solution that could eliminate this problem entirely. A new feature currently in testing will automatically display a contact’s saved photo from your phone’s address book when they have not set a profile picture on the app.
How the New Profile Photo Replacement Works
According to recent reports, WhatsApp is testing a profile photo replacement feature on the iOS beta version (26.12.10.71). This update aims to remove the generic gray placeholder icon that appears for contacts who either have not uploaded a profile picture or have hidden it from you. Instead, the app will pull an image from your device’s contact list and display it in that space. Importantly, this change happens only on your end. It does not alter the original settings or privacy choices of the other person.
Easier Identification of Contacts
One of the primary goals of this feature is to simplify user experience. When you have several contacts with identical names, recognizing the correct person without a photo can be frustrating. Once this feature rolls out, that difficulty disappears. If you have saved a picture of a friend in your phone’s address book and that friend has not set a WhatsApp profile picture, the app will automatically show your saved photo as their profile icon. This makes scanning your chat list and finding the right person much faster and more intuitive.
Two Key Scenarios Where This Helps
For Your Own Profile: If you have not set a profile picture yourself, the app will display the photo you have saved for yourself in your phone’s address book. However, this image will only be visible to you within your own settings and interface.
For Other Users: When a contact has hidden their profile photo using privacy settings—such as setting it to “Nobody”—WhatsApp can still show the picture you have saved for them on your device. This ensures you can still identify them easily in your chat list, even if they have chosen to hide their image from everyone.
Privacy and Security Considerations
It is important to understand that this feature relies entirely on your local address book. It only applies to contacts for whom you have granted WhatsApp access to your device’s contact list. The most critical point is that the displayed photo remains private. It is not shared with anyone else. The image appears only on your personal interface, helping you organize and identify your contacts without compromising anyone’s privacy settings.
Expected Release Timeline
At present, this feature is available to a limited group of iOS beta testers through the TestFlight app. Users who have installed the latest beta update can try it out.
