On Thursday, February 5, the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) experienced a sudden and significant outage across India, beginning around 4:00 PM IST. The disruption affected users in several metropolitan areas, leaving many unable to access the service on both desktop and mobile applications.

According to data from outage monitoring services, the majority of complaints—approximately 64 percent—came from users accessing the X website. Meanwhile, 23 percent of reports indicated issues with the mobile app, and 13 percent of users experienced difficulties with logging in or out of their accounts. The platform’s website, in particular, displayed persistent error messages, with many users reporting that refreshing the page resulted in a “Something went wrong. Try reloading” notification.
Geographic Impact and Affected Cities
The outage was most heavily concentrated in India’s largest tech and commercial hubs. The highest volume of disruption reports originated from Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Users in these cities described the platform as being completely unresponsive for extended periods, with no clear indication from X regarding the cause of the failure or an estimated time for restoration.
Earlier Instagram Disruption Adds to the Day’s Woes
This incident follows a separate global outage earlier in the day that affected Instagram. On the morning of February 5, around 7:00 AM IST, over 10,000 users reported problems with the photo-sharing platform. The disruption was especially pronounced on the Instagram website accessed via browsers, which became entirely inaccessible. Mobile app users also faced login errors and saw a “Sorry, something went wrong” message on their feeds. Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has not yet issued an official statement explaining the cause of that outage.

As of the latest updates, X has not released a formal acknowledgment or explanation for the afternoon outage in India. The sudden nature of the disruption has left many users frustrated, particularly those who rely on the platform for real-time updates, professional networking, and social interaction.
