Yogini Ekadashi 2026: Resolving the Date Confusion for the Auspicious Fast

In the vast tapestry of Sanatan Dharma, the Ekadashi tithi holds a place of profound spiritual significance, dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu. Among these sacred days, the Yogini Ekadashi, observed during the Krishna Paksha of the Ashadha month, is particularly revered. Religious scriptures extol this fast as immensely meritorious, believed to cleanse devotees of their sins and alleviate life’s hardships. This year, a unique astrological scenario has emerged, with the Ekadashi tithi spanning both July 10 and July 11. This overlap has naturally led to confusion among the faithful regarding the correct day for observing the fast. Let us delve into the calculations of the Vedic calendar and the guidelines set forth in the scriptures to determine the most appropriate date for Yogini Ekadashi in 2026.

Understanding the Duration of the Ekadashi Tithi

According to the Vedic panchang, the Ekadashi tithi of the Ashadha Krishna Paksha will commence on Friday, July 10, 2026, at 8:10 AM. This tithi will remain in effect until Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 5:23 AM, after which the Dwadashi tithi will begin. It is this dual-day presence of the tithi that has sparked the current uncertainty among devotees.

Scholars well-versed in the Dharma Shastras point to a specific astrological conjunction this year. On both days, the Ekadashi tithi will not be fully present at the time of sunrise. On July 11, the Ekadashi will have concluded before sunrise, giving way to Dwadashi. This situation is referred to as “Ekadashi Kshaya” (the waning of Ekadashi) in the scriptures. In such a scenario, where the Ekadashi tithi is not fully available at sunrise on either day, the prescribed rule is to observe the fast on the first day. Consequently, for householders following general practices, keeping the Yogini Ekadashi fast on Friday, July 10, 2026, is considered scripturally appropriate. Devotees who adhere strictly to the Vaishnava tradition, however, may choose to observe the fast on July 11.

  • On Dashami, consume only a sattvic (pure and simple) diet.
  • Avoid all tamasic (impure and heavy) foods entirely.
  • Refrain from eating moong dal, masoor dal, wheat, barley, and eggplant.
  • On Ekadashi, wake up during Brahma Muhurta (the auspicious period before sunrise) or before sunrise.
  • Take a bath and wear clean, fresh clothes.
  • Make a solemn resolve (sankalp) to observe the fast while remembering Lord Vishnu.
  • Establish a kalash (sacred pot) at the place of worship.
  • Perform a ceremonial worship of an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu.
  • Offer Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, incense, a lamp, and a food offering (naivedya).
  • Chant the Vishnu mantra, “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya,” or recite the Vishnu Sahasranama.
  • Maintain a spirit of devotion, self-control, and sattvic conduct throughout the day.
  • Conclude the fast by performing the ritual of Parana (breaking the fast) on the Dwadashi tithi.

Precautions to Observe During the Fast

  • It is considered forbidden to pluck Tulsi leaves on both Ekadashi and Dwadashi.
  • Pluck the required Tulsi leaves a day in advance for the puja.
  • Consumption of rice is prohibited on Ekadashi.
  • Other family members, along with the devotee observing the fast, should also avoid eating rice.
  • Following these rules related to Tulsi and grains is considered spiritually auspicious.
  • It is believed that adhering to these guidelines ensures one receives the complete benefits of the Ekadashi fast.
  • Throughout the fast, maintain a sense of purity, restraint, and unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu.
