PM Internship Scheme Set for Third Phase Launch with Key Format Changes

The central government’s flagship PM Internship Scheme is expected to enter its third phase by the end of January, according to sources familiar with the program. This new round comes with significant structural modifications designed to make the initiative more appealing to young applicants across the country.

Planned Adjustments to Internship Duration

One of the most notable changes involves the duration of internships in certain sectors. Sources indicate that the 12-month internship period may be shortened for select programs, particularly those linked to the service industry. The government believes that reducing the time commitment will encourage greater participation and allow more young people to gain practical, hands-on experience without lengthy obligations.

Declining Acceptance Rates Raise Concerns

Recent data presented during the Parliament’s winter session reveals a concerning trend in the scheme’s second phase. The number of candidates accepting internship offers dropped by 12.4 percent compared to the inaugural round. While 28,141 candidates accepted offers in the first phase, that figure fell to 24,638 in the second phase.

The acceptance rate has also seen a noticeable decline. In the first round, 34 percent of candidates accepted their internship offers. This percentage slipped to 29 percent in the second round. Despite these percentage drops, the government points out that the total number of offers extended in the second phase was actually higher, meaning more overall opportunities were available.

Major Companies Driving Opportunities

The second phase witnessed substantial participation from both private and public sector enterprises. Several prominent companies contributed a significant number of internship positions:

  • Jubilant FoodWorks led the way with 13,658 internship openings
  • Power Grid Corporation of India offered 7,880 positions
  • HDFC Bank provided 6,800 internship slots

Additionally, around 70 new companies joined the program during this phase, expanding the range of options available to aspiring interns and increasing the overall number of opportunities.

Scheme Background and Ambitious Targets

The PM Internship Scheme was first announced in the full Union Budget for 2024-25. The program carries an ambitious objective: to provide internship opportunities to one crore young people over the next five years through the country’s top 500 companies.

The pilot project was officially launched on October 3 of the previous year by the concerned ministry. Under this pilot phase, the initial target was to create 1.25 lakh internship opportunities within a single year.

What the Changes Mean for Applicants

The upcoming format adjustments signal the government’s responsiveness to feedback and its commitment to refining the scheme based on observed outcomes. By potentially shortening internship durations in certain sectors, officials aim to address one of the likely barriers to participation — the lengthy commitment required.

For young job seekers, the third phase is expected to offer a more flexible structure while maintaining the core value of real-world professional exposure. The involvement of established companies across banking, food services, and power infrastructure ensures that interns receive quality training and industry-relevant experience.

As the January launch approaches, prospective applicants are advised to monitor official announcements for specific details regarding eligibility, application timelines, and the revised internship formats. The government’s continued focus on expanding corporate partnerships suggests that the third phase will build on the momentum of previous rounds while introducing improvements aimed at boosting participation numbers.

The scheme remains a cornerstone of the government’s youth skill development strategy, bridging the gap between academic learning and industry requirements. With the upcoming changes, it seeks to become more accessible and attractive to a broader demographic of young Indians seeking meaningful professional exposure.
